PSA - #1 Location: Venice Beach Boardwalk, California Date: November 1st , 1997 Names: Dennis & Charity From:
Dennis, Portland, Oregon - Charity, Utah |
Been in Venice for 1 month, met 2 months ago in Sacramento. Dennis - "It is not that easy to get off the streets. It is hard to get a job when you are dirty, can't shower, no telephone, and have no place to live. You have to really swallow your pride to ask someone for a nickel. The money that we panhandle is for food and survival. The toughest thing about living on the streets is maintaining your sanity, you see a lot of bad things out here, people that are mentally disabled yelling and screaming, the police hassle you, gangs, the public insults and looks down at you. |

It is tough
just to take a shower, I would like to shower for an hour just to feel
the water. I am not free to go home and sleep in a bed. I would love
to have a home that welcomed me, to further my education, I have a fourth
grade education. I have a lot of hopes in my life for both me and her.
Charity: Been living on the streets for 3 months. "I have always wanted
to travel and that is what put me on the streets, my parents did not
have room for me. It is not bad, but it has only been three months". |

I have been traveling for 2 years. I left home by choice. I talk with
my parents about every three days. I am healthy. I never spare change,
I only do when I am really hungry or I need to get somewhere. I hit LA
at 7:00 last night and decided to leave. It is just a bunch of street
hustlers here. Hustlers will lure in by being nice". |
