The Youth Art Gallery documents the lives and exhibits the art of 10 different artists who may come from one of the following situations: runaway, homeless, push out, throw out, abused, neglected, abandoned, ward of the state or in process of independent living in shelters and streets across America. During the months of April, May and June, 1998 Nomads 1800 traveled to New Orleans, LA, Chicago, IL, Detroit, MI, Portland, OR and New York City, NY, where we interviewed and documented 10 youths art, vision, and honesty. The recent art and communication program is shared between Los Angeles Youth Network and Covenant House. The Butcher Paper Mural Project is based upon the exchange of ideas through written communication and drawing. The program functions in many ways like a co-operative mural project where many artists contribute to create a final and finished mural. The Butcher Paper Mural Project also has many elements of a pen pal or mail exchange program. The Butcher Paper Mural Project through drawn art and written word enhance idea and broaden communication between people. The goal of the Butcher Paper Mural Project is to allow youth to share their drawn work, written ideas, attitudes and insights with each other and then also share the final mural with others through the Nomads 1800 Web-site Art Gallery. This type of communication exchange will effect many different types of humanity on many different social, economic, race, gender, age and psychological levels. Real people interacting about real issues that have significant bearing on the concerns of today. The possible conditions that led the youth ending up on the streets and in the shelters - abuse, neglect, drug addiction - and their causes, are conditions that effect all youth, adults and world wide human populations to some extent. They are outward indicators of more subtle but massive changes: in social value systems, lifestyles, working patterns and income levels. The Butcher Paper Mural Project will expand understanding among all people of the issues that effect us all, thus creating an opportunity for people of different cultural spheres to come together in a new way, stimulating development of art, communication, thought, and ideas.
